Robotic-assisted Surgery

Robotic advancements at Mercy:

  • Cardiovascular surgeons Allen Morris, MD and Frank Slachman, MD, lead the West Coast in the number of complex valve repair and replacement surgeries performed and are pioneers in minimally invasive techniques, da Vinci cardiac surgery and complex aortic disease treatments. Watch these two videos to hear Dr. Morris and Dr. Slachman talk about the future of heart surgery at Mercy, including minimally invasive mitral valve surgery using the robotic da Vinci® Surgical System.

These and several other Mercy Medical Group physicians are part of the most comprehensive robotic-assisted surgery program in the greater Sacramento area. The local Mercy hospitals feature three 3D high definition da Vinci® Surgical Systems - one at Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, the second at Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Carmichael and a third at Mercy Hospital of Folsom.

This talented group of specially trained surgeons is using the state-of-the-art da Vinci system to perform complicated surgical procedures, treating the widest array of conditions in our region, including:

  • Cardiac Surgery
  • Colorectal Surgery
  • Gynecology
  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Urology

Robotic-assisted procedures using da Vinci surgery offer surgeons a degree of precision, control and dexterity traditional surgeries simply can't match. Some of the benefits to patients include:

  • Small incisions, meaning scarring is drastically reduced
  • Shorter recovery times, measured in days instead of weeks
  • Reduced pain and potential for complications

As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed, as surgery is unique to each patient and procedure. The da Vinci Surgical System is considered safe and effective, but may not be appropriate for everyone. Always talk to your doctor about all treatment options, as well as the associated benefits and risks.
