Getting Stronger Together

Individualized care plans.

Therapy Services

At Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta, our team of highly-skilled, licensed occupational, physical, and speech therapists design individualized treatments using evidence-based practices to help patients gain their highest level of independence for engagement in the physical, cognitive, and social-emotional aspects of daily living. Our team of therapy professionals serves all ages, both within our hospital, and those individuals referred by their doctors to our outpatient rehabilitation centers.

Physical Therapy

Our physical therapists evaluate and treat problems with muscles, the skeletal system, and the nervous system. We offer hands-on treatment of soft tissues and joints, heat, cold, sound waves (ultrasound), electrical stimulation, mechanical traction, and more. We carefully select exercises to promote healing, improve posture and movement, and prevent re-injury.

We can help patients:

  • Alleviate pain
  • Improve stamina
  • Restore optimal motion, strength, and coordination
  • Resume many daily activities, work, and play
  • Return to sports and outdoor activities

Occupational Therapy

Our occupational therapists help improve an individual's ability to engage in the functional tasks of daily living -- the everyday activities that occupy our time. For an adult, these may include self-care, home/family care, work, and leisure activities. For a child, these might involve learning/working at school, playing, or simply the process of developing. For an infant, this could be eating or sleeping well.

At any age, the ability to perform daily living tasks safely and independently can be influenced by underlying impairments in a person's physical, cognitive, sensory/perceptual, and/or social-emotional skills. Whether those impairments are caused by disease, injury or developmental differences, Occupational Therapy interventions are geared towards remedying them through:

  • motor control retraining - strength, range of movement, coordination
  • manual treatments - massage, mobilizations, modalities
  • visual - or other sensory-perceptual training to help the brain process, organize, and use the information it receives from the senses
  • social and cognitive skills training to help with attention, problem solving, emotional adaptability, interacting with others
  • the use of therapeutic activities specific to the deficit area being addressed (e.g. eating, dressing, handwriting, meal preparation, medication management...etc)

In circumstances where a skill cannot be developed or restored, occupational therapy focuses on implementing adaptations to help fit the task to the person's abilities via:

  • teaching compensatory techniques/alternative ways to complete a task
  • modifying the work, home, or school environment
  • training in the use of adaptive equipment or assistive technology

Occupational therapists also work on prevention:

  • safety assessment and training
  • joint protection
  • energy conservation/work simplification

At Mercy Medical Center, our occupational therapists promote health & development, and help to prevent -- or teach to live better with -- injury, illness or disability. We can help you improve the skills you need for doing the job of living your daily life.
