Your doctor will discuss orthopedic surgery with you when all other orthopedic treatment options have been exhausted, or if surgery is the best option for your current condition.
Orthopedic surgery may be done as an inpatient or outpatient procedure. With an inpatient procedure, you will remain in the hospital for one or more days while you recover. More complex orthopedic surgeries, such as hip or knee replacement, amputations and rotator cuff tears, require aftercare to manage your pain, care for wounds and help you become mobile on our own.
Advanced Orthopedic Surgical Options
Unless you have had a fall with a break that necessitates immediate orthopedic surgery, the choice to have a total joint replacement is a big decision. Your orthopedic surgeon will review your case and may suggest treatment options to relieve your pain and increase mobility. Depending on your age and personal health history, a treatment plan may provide adequate pain relief and functionality for few months or up to several years. In many cases, orthopedic surgery to replace your hip(s) or knee(s) may be necessary to to return to an active, pain-free lifestyle.
Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery
Outpatient orthopedic surgery may be scheduled at Mercy Gilbert or one of our affiliated outpatient surgical centers. Some of the most common outpatient procedures include arthroscopy knee, manipulation of the knee (a) procedure to help with stiffness after arthroscopy and carpel tunnel syndrome, among others.
Our orthopedic surgery admission nurse will call you prior to your surgery to take your medical history and gather any other important information.
Almost any orthopedic surgery will require some physical and or occupational therapy to aid in the recovery process. Mercy Gilbert offers inpatient rehabilitation services and our sister hospital, Chandler Regional Medical Center, offers outpatient rehabilitation services. Our licensed and highly trained therapists will work closely with your surgeon to develop your plan of recovery and strengthening exercises.
