Dignity Health Physician Responds to Mammogram Guideline Changes

Mercy Imaging Center Radiologist discusses the importance of mammograms after study suggests screening every 2 years is safe for postmenopausal women.

A study released on Oct. 20 finds that menopausal status is a better indicator than age for mammography frequency. The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Oncology, also suggests that premenopausal women over age 40 deciding whether to undergo mammography may want annual mammograms to increase their chances of finding cancers at an earlier stage; however they should weigh this potential benefit against the increased potential for false alarms, which occur more often with more frequent screening.

FOX 40 Reporter Marin Austin interviewed Mercy Imaging Center Radiologist Daniel Herron, MD, who said while yearly mammograms for women over 40 may result in false alarms, they also find breast cancer in its early stages, which is potentially life-saving. Austin also interviewed a breast cancer patient.
