Comprehensive Stroke Center

Dignity Health Neurological Institute’s leadership in stroke care was validated in 2014 when The Joint Commission certified Mercy San Juan Medical Center as the first Comprehensive Stroke Center north of the Bay Area. This continued leadership recognizes our ability to treat even the most complex stroke cases, providing 24/7 access to neurology, neurosurgery, neurointerventional radiology, and neurocritical care. This designation reflects a unique level of comprehensive care that includes:

  • A dedicated neurocritical care unit devoted to complex stroke patients
  • High volume neurointerventional radiology services for brain aneurysm, stroke, and other complex neurovascular diseases
  • Advanced imaging capabilities including 3-Tesla MRI, biplane angiography, and CT perfusion available on site around the clock
  • Dedicated vascular neurology service, including post-hospital care
  • Treatment advances through participation in stroke research

All Dignity Health Neurological Institute hospitals in the Greater Sacramento region are designated Certified Stroke Centers, a distinction recognizing facilities that follow the best practices for stroke care. These facilities also provide integrated services in stroke diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.

Furthermore, in 2017, Dignity Health was recognized with six American Heart Association/American Stroke Association "Get With The Guidelines®" Stroke Gold Plus awards – and six Target Elite Plus awards – for achievement of top benchmarks in quality patient care and outcomes according to evidence-based guidelines.
