Orthopedic Surgeons are skilled in both surgical and non-surgical treatments, offering a full range of arthroscopic procedures and joint reconstructions.

Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Institute Physicians are specialists in the field of sports medicine and trained to address the unique needs of athletes. They examine, evaluate and treat a wide variety of sports and activity-related injuries and musculoskeletal conditions.

Podiatrists evaluate foot and ankle problems in patients of all ages, and provide both surgical and non-surgical treatments, including customized orthotics.

Physiatrists use diagnostic techniques such as electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies to diagnose and provide expertise on rehabilitation regimens, as well as procedures such as spinal injections and nerve blocks.

Meredith Bean, MD - Sports Medicine

Meredith Bean, MD, is a board certified sports medicine physician. She specializes in the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions. She is passionate about providing high quality care for competitive and recreational athletes of all ages, as well as for those just wanting to become more active. Having been an athlete herself, she understands the unique needs of athletes in medical and rehabilitative settings. Dr. Bean is the team physician for Cal Women’s soccer team. She has an additional interest in running medicine and served as the Medical co-Director of the California International Marathon for several years. She has provided medical coverage for a wide variety of other running and team sports events and has been the tournament physician for WTA professional tennis events. During her sports medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado she provided sideline and training room medical care for football and soccer, as well as for ice hockey at Denver University. And she staffed a medical clinic at a ski resort where she treated acute ski and snowboard injuries. Dr. Bean grew up in the Bay Area and played soccer in college for University of California, Los Angeles. She now remains active with running, hiking, biking, skiing, snowboarding, and surfing when the waves are small.

Michael Burns, MD - Medical Director

Michael Burns, MD, is the Medical Director for the Center for Sports Medicine. He is a physiatrist board certified in sports medicine and physical medicine & rehabilitation (PM&R). He completed his PM&R residency at Stanford University and sports medicine fellowship at the Dartmouth University/Evergreen Sports Medicine program. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of muscle, nerve, and joint injuries and the use of ultrasound for imaging and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. Dr. Burns focuses on knowing his patients’ goals, helping them to recover and optimize performance, and to prevent future injury. Dr. Burns is passionate about helping athletes of all types and ages and believes that physicians, physical therapists, and athletic trainers do their best work as a team. His professional interests include rugby and adaptive sports medicine. Dr. Burns has served as team physician for rugby at Colby College and the University of New England and for the NAEHL Fighting Spirit hockey team. He is a classifier for the US Wheelchair Rugby Association. He provides medical coverage for a variety of sporting events: ski clinics, triathlons, biking, running, and swimming events, wrestling, dance, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, basketball, and football. Dr. Burns is a team physician at Northgate High School.

Stephen Chen, MD - Sports Medicine

Stephen Chen, MD, is a board certified Sports Medicine physician and pediatrician.  He specializes in the non-operative medical treatment of a wide variety of various musculoskeletal conditions.  He cares for athletes of all ages and levels, both recreational and competitive.  He has provided sideline coverage for NCAA Division I athletics, as well as high school sports. Currently he is a team physician for Northgate High School in Walnut Creek. He continues his love of sports coverage by volunteering for the San Francisco Marathon and other sporting events in the Bay Area. His goals are to treat acute and overuse injuries with an emphasis on getting patients back to an active lifestyle in a safe manner. He strongly believes that patient understanding is a key component in one’s health care and will take the time to educate patients on their conditions so that they can be active, well-informed participants in their health care decisions. Dr. Chen grew up in Southern California but has happily settled in the Bay Area with his wife and two children. He personally enjoys the outdoors including running and hiking. He is an avid fan of football, basketball and golf.

Alicia Knee, DPM - Podiatry

Alicia Knee, DPM, is board-certified in both foot and ankle surgery in San Francisco. She completed her undergraduate studies in biology and dance performance at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, and then went on to attain a doctor of podiatric medicine degree with honors at the California College of Podiatric Medicine in San Francisco in 1995. Her background as a dancer gives Dr. Knee special insight into the biomechanics of movement and special treatment options for the athlete. Passionate about education, she has lectured on a variety of topics, including dance techniques and injuries, foot and ankle fractures, flatfoot reconstructions, surgical reconstruction, and more. Dr. Knee holds certifications in foot surgery as well as rearfoot and ankle reconstruction from the ABPS, the Board of American Board of Podiatric Surgery, as well as a total ankle arthroplasty certification.
