Sequoia Hospital Receives Highest Possible Rating for Aortic Valve Replacement

Posted in:
Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital has received a three-star rating for the quality of its aortic valve replacement procedures from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), the highest designation possible for medical facilities.

"This prestigious recognition from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, considered one of the highest standards by which to evaluate cardiac surgery programs, further underlines the excellence of our cardiac surgery team," said Bill Graham, Sequoia Hospital president. "At the Sequoia Hospital Heart and Vascular Institute, our patients benefit from superlative cardiac care delivered right here in our community."

The designation is the result of a comprehensive rating system that compares the quality of cardiac surgery programs among hospitals across the nation. The STS National Database gathers information from more than 90 percent of the facilities that perform cardiac surgery in the United States. Of the 1,017 hospitals participating during the most recent reporting period, just 73 received a three-star rating.

"The Heart and Vascular Institute at Sequoia Hospital has long been a destination for those seeking the highest quality in cardiac procedures," said Luis Castro, MD, cardiothoracic surgeon and Sequoia Hospital's director of cardiac surgery. "We are known for the expertise of our cardiac physicians and hospital staff, but also for the kindness with which they deliver worldclass care. That is what sets us apart."

Sequoia Hospital has been named one of America's top 100 hospitals for cardiac care by Healthgrades. The hospital's Heart and Vascular Institute is now affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic Heart and Vascular Institute, the first affiliation of its kind in Northern California.

Founded in 1964, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons is an international not-for-profit organization representing cardiothoracic surgeons, researchers, and allied health care professionals. STS has more than 7,100 members in 90 countries.
