Sequoia Hospital Offers Mobi C Artificial Spinal Disc Replacement

Posted in:
Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital now offers Mobi-C Cervical Disc (Mobi-C) surgery, the most advanced technology available to alleviate pain from herniated, bulging, and slipped discs in the neck.

"Sequoia Hospital is proud to offer state-of-the-art neurosurgical procedures right here in our community," said Sequoia Hospital President Bill Graham. "With the addition of this new technology, Sequoia is now one of the few hospitals in the Bay Area offering this option for spine surgery."

The Mobi-C is an alternative to traditional spinal fusion and is the first such technology to receive FDA-approval for cervical disc replacement of two adjacent disc levels. Mobi-C is particularly effective in patients 65 years-of-age and younger with pain, weakness, and/or numbness due to abnormal discs.

"The Mobi-C gives our younger patients who wish to lead more active lives another option beyond fusion," said Paul Jackson, MD, neurosurgeon. "This procedure has successfully restored quality of life and saved patients from procedures that risk damage to spinal sections surrounding the affected disc in their neck."

Traditional spinal fusion procedures result in disc segments that no longer move, which can accelerate the natural wear and tear on the discs above and below the fusion - increasing the chances of future surgery. Technologies like Mobi-C allow for the removal of degenerated discs and replacement with artificial discs to restore height and to remove pressure on pinched nerves. As a result, the disc level can continue to behave as a functioning joint with normal range of motion, helping to reduce the need for future spinal procedures.
