Sequoia Hospital Recognized Among Nations Best for Cardiac Care

Posted in:
Dignity Health Sequoia Hospital has been recognized as one of America's 50 Best hospitals for cardiac surgery and one of America's 100 Best hospitals for cardiac care by Healthgrades, the leading online resource that helps consumers search, compare, and connect with physicians and hospitals.

Sequoia Hospital received 11 awards total in the areas of cardiac care, neurosciences, and gastrointestinal care.

"Sequoia treats the most complex cardiac cases with outstanding results. Our affiliation with the worldrenowned Cleveland Clinic Heart & Vascular Institute provides patients with an exceptional and unmatched level of cardiac care right here on the Peninsula," said Bill Graham, Sequoia Hospital president. "This recognition from Healthgrades is a true testament to the dedication and expertise of our entire cardiac team."

These achievements are part of new findings released today in the Healthgrades 2017 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals nationally, regionally, and at the local level, and the impact that this variation may have on health outcomes.

Sequoia was recognized among the top 5 percent in the nation for cardiac surgery two years in a row (2)016-2017; among the top 10 percent in the nation for overall cardiac services for three consecutive years (2)015-2017 and cardiac surgery for two consecutive years (2)016-2017; and received 5-star awards for valve surgery (2)016-2017, treatment of heart attack (2)015-2017, treatment of stroke (2)016-2017, and colorectal surgery (2)016-2017. A 5-star rating indicates that clinical outcomes at Sequoia are better than expected in these areas. Sequoia also received Healthgrades Excellence Awards for cardiac care (2)015-2017 and cardiac surgery (2)016-2017.

About the Report

For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, and assessed hospital performance relative to each of 32 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital's quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5 star (s)tatistically significantly better than expected, 3 star (not statistically different from expected), and 1 star (s)tatistically significantly worse than expected categories. The complete Healthgrades 2017 Report to the Nation with detailed cohort-specific outcomes data, hospital-specific quality achievements, and detailed study methodology, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality.
