Pulmonary Function Lab

If you are experiencing shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, your doctor may order a pulmonary function test. This test measures how well your lungs take in and release air, and how well they move gases such as oxygen from the atmosphere into your body's circulation.

Pulmonary Function Laboratory

The Pulmonary Function Laboratory at St. Joseph’s Medical Center features advanced diagnostic services needed to accurately assess and treat lung conditions.

Pulmonary function tests measure how well your lungs work. These tests determine how much air your lungs can hold, how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs, and how well your lungs can transport oxygen into and remove carbon dioxide from your blood.

Pulmonary function tests are done to:

  • Diagnose certain types of lung disease such as obstructive (COPD, Asthma, Bronchitis) and or restrictive (Pulmonary Fibrosis, Sarcoidosis)
  • Find the cause of shortness of breath
  • Check lung function before someone has surgery
  • Assess the efficacy of medication
  • Measure progress in disease treatment
