“Stubbly” Challenge to Support Men’s Health Launched by UA Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital

The new University of Arizona Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center is issuing a bristly challenge.

Tired of the daily grind of lather, shave, rinse, repeat?  Put down the blades and take up a great cause during the month of November to support men’s health and cancer medical services.

Called “Let Your Humankindness Grow,” the premise of the challenge is simple: Don’t shave between Nov. 1 and Nov. 30 and instead make a donation to support men’s health programs at the Cancer Center.  Donations are being made via the St. Joseph’s Foundation, supportstjosephs.org/noshave.

Already notable participants are signing up.  Former D-backs All-Stars Luis Gonzalez and J.J. Putz and President and CEO Derrick Hall, a prostate cancer survivor, are part of the challenge.  Top administrators, doctors and employees from St. Joseph’s are also taking the stubbly charity challenge and inviting everyone to join in.

“November is national Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, so we wanted to use this opportunity to raise awareness of cancers that most impact men,” says Dr. Peter Lance, the interim deputy director of the Cancer Center.  “Last year more than 2 million men counted themselves as prostate cancer survivors in the U.S. ‘Let Your Humankindness Grow,’ is a fun challenge about a serious topic.  We hope that people from all over the Valley will join in and help us fight cancers that most impact men including colon, lung and prostate.”

Participants can have their “pre” photos taken at a kickoff event at St. Joseph’s on Friday, Oct. 30, from 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. and are invited to share their whisker-growing progress on social media using #growhumankindness. The challenge will culminate with the Great Shave Off on Dec. 1 at the downtown Cancer Center.

The University of Arizona Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s opened in August as the lone National comprehensive Cancer Institute-designated center headquartered in the state.
