Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship

Barrow offers two, two-year Epilepsy Fellowship positions. The first year is ACGME approved in Clinical Neurophysiology.

Candidates must be willing to make a two year commitment to training in adult clinical epilepsy and clinical or laboratory epilepsy research. Clinical training includes exposure to:

  • A full range of pharmacological and surgical management strategies in a busy epilepsy clinic and 10-bed adult monitoring unit. There are also five ICU beds equipped for video-EEG monitoring.
  • Supervised interpretation of a large number of EEG in a very active clinical neurophysiology laboratory.
  • Supervised interpretation of CCTV/EEG recordings of seizures in adolescents and adults being evaluated for diagnostic purposes and/or for possible surgical treatment of intractable epilepsy.

Epilepsy & Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship Research

Research training begins in the second year and may continue through at least one additional year, depending on the fellow’s interests, abilities and success at obtaining further support. Specific areas of research interest within the Barrow Epilepsy Program currently include:

  • Clinical and experimental aspects of status epilepticus
  • Clinical trials of antiepileptic drugs for control of epileptic seizures
  • Surgical treatment and neurobiology of hypothalamic hamartomas
  • Genetics and neurogenomics of epilepsy susceptibility
  • Closed loop feedback control of experimental seizures using seizure prediction algorithms
  • VNS stimulation paradigms in experimental epilepsy in the rat
  • Neurobiology of febrile seizures
  • Mechanisms of and strategies for prevention of epileptogenesis
  • Prediction of epileptogenesis after traumatic brain injury
  • Mechanisms of the ketogenic diet
  • The role of nicotinic receptors in Alzheimer’s Disease-related epilepsy
  • Single neuron recording in human brain using microwire electrodes
