Injury Prevention Programs at St. Joseph's

The best way to avoid becoming a trauma victim is through education. At St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center Trauma Services Department, we provide educational programs and information to help keep you and your loved ones safe. We attend community events, and are available to schools and organizations to provide presentations.

Falls Prevention Program

Falls are the leading cause of injury-related mortality among Arizona residents age 65 and older, and one of the top three reasons individuals present to the SJHMC Trauma Department. Falls are a leading cause of injury and death in aging Americans age 65 or older. Fall risk reduction is a primary focus for multiple departments across our organization.

Balance Masters is a FREE group class that addresses fear or risk of falling through balance and strength exercises.  It is held on our campus in the Stained Glass Lobby on Tuesdays from 11:15am –Noon.

FallsTalk® is a FREE evidence-based falls prevention program consisting of a personalized behavior change intervention for individuals at risk for falls.  It is offered one-on-one via an in-home/community visit, telephone call or video conference call.

For questions about the program or to make a referral, call (602) 406-4697, (602) 406-3935 or email [email protected].

Stop the Bleed Classes

Uncontrolled bleeding is a major cause of preventative deaths. Approximately 40% of trauma-related deaths worldwide are due to bleeding or its consequences, establishing hemorrhage as the most common cause of preventable death in trauma.

What stops bleeding? In a STOP THE BLEED® course, you’ll learn three quick techniques to help save a life before someone bleeds out: (1) How to use your hands to apply pressure to a wound; (2) How to pack a wound to control bleeding; (3) How to correctly apply a tourniquet. These three techniques will empower you to assist in an emergency and potentially save a life.

A STOP THE BLEED® course is for people who are interested in learning this lifesaving skill. The American College of Surgeons STOP THE BLEED® campaign has trained over 1 million people including students, teachers, and community groups. We are committed to training anyone who is old enough to understand what the course teaches and is interested in learning how to STOP THE BLEED® and save a life.

We offer this course for FREE to members of the community.  To schedule a class for your group or to inquire about attending a class for yourself, call the Trauma Injury Prevention Program Coordinator at (602) 406-3935.

Child Passenger Safety

Children are often injured or killed in motor vehicle incidents due to lack of restraint use. These injuries and deaths are largely preventable when children are appropriately restrained. According to NHTSA and National Safe Kids, four out of five car seats are used incorrectly.

The Children Are Priceless Passengers (CAPP) Program provides child passenger safety classes in both English and Spanish, and is taught by a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician to drivers who have been issued a citation for ARS §28-907.A - (Child Restraint Law).
Additionally, the child passenger safety classes are open to the general public.

In this two-hour class, parents will learn about proper car seat use, installation, crash dynamics, seat belt systems, and the four steps to protect your child in the vehicle.
The program also provides new child safety seats to participants in the event the participant requires a car seat.

This program is not for parents only; it is also very valuable information for daycare providers or anyone transporting children.
