Sister Mary Sabina Imaging Center

The Imaging Center at St. Mary Medical Center is one of the first in the City of Long Beach to have a state-of-art digital mammography unit. The center has been providing mammogram and diagnostic imaging services in the Long Beach and surrounding communities since 1984. The Imaging Center makes scheduling your mammogram screening easy. Plus, our new 3D mammography helps to identify more invasive breast cancers with greater accuracy. Every mammography screening is read by our specially trained breast fellowship radiologists.

Every Woman Counts

Every Woman Counts (EWC) provides free clinical breast exams, mammograms, pelvic exams, and pap tests to  California’s underserved women.  To qualify for the clinical breast exams, pelvic exams and pap test you must be 21 year old or older.  Screening mammograms are available to women 40 years of age or older.  Diagnostic mammograms are available to women of any age who have an abnormal breast symptom. All women must be of low/no income and meet the EWC Income Criteria as well as have no insurance or limited insurance and live in California.

Mammography

The Imaging Center makes scheduling your mammogram screening easy, especially for all healthy women beginning at age 40, according to the American Cancer Society. Why is it so important? Mammograms can help doctors detect abnormalities and changes in breast tissue before they start to cause symptoms.

And now, our new 3D mammography helps to identify more invasive breast cancers with greater accuracy. Plus, every mammography screening is read by our specially trained breast fellowship radiologists. Early detection and treatment of breast cancer can be life-saving, so let us make it easy for you to take the preventive screening that could make all the difference.

St. Mary's Imaging Center is accredited by the American College of Radiology for Mammography services.

Bone Density Screening

In addition to breast care services, the center offers Bone Density Testing (DEXA Scan) to determine the presence of Osteoporosis. We also offer a variety of ultrasound studies including OB, Pelvic, Breast, Abdominal as well as Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsies.

At St. Mary’s Imaging Center, we care for you from birth through life’s changes. For wellness and prevention to help you age gracefully, we offer bone density assessment.

Osteoporosis is a bone-thinning disease that can lead to debilitating fractures, typically in the spine, hip and wrist. Although the condition is often considered a “women’s diseases,” men may also be affected.

Many people don’t know they have osteoporosis until they have a fracture or have a bone density scan, also known as a bone mineral density (BMD) test. A bone density scan is a simple, non-invasive test that measures a person’s bone density or volume of calcium and minerals within bone tissue.

Bone density screening can help to:

  • Detect osteoporosis before a fracture occurs
  • Predict your chance of fracturing in the future
  • Determine your rate of bone loss and/or monitor the effects of treatment

The Nation Osteoporosis Foundation recommends you have a bone density test if:

  • You are a woman age 65 or older
  • You are a man age 70 or older
  • You break a bone after age 50
  • You are a woman of menopausal age with risk factors
  • You are a postmenopausal woman under age 55 with risk factors
  • You are a man age 50 – 69 with risk factors

A bone density test may also be necessary if you have any of the following:

  • An X-ray of your spine showing a break or bone loss in your spine
  • Back pain with a possible break in your spine
  • Height loss of ½ inch or more within one year
  • Total height loss of 1 ½ inches from your original height
