"This recognition highlights our critical care team's knowledge and dedication to achieving excellent outcomes for patients," said Pamela Lindemoen, St. Mary's Medical Center president. "While no one wants to find themselves or their loved ones in need of critical care, there is comfort knowing our dedicated clinicians and staff provide rapid, expert treatment should the need arise."
These achievements are part of new findings released today in the Healthgrades 2017 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals nationally, regionally, and at the local level, and the impact that this variation may have on health outcomes.
St. Mary's also received five-star awards for treatment of stroke, treatment of gastrointestinal bleed, and treatment of sepsis. A 5-star rating indicates that clinical outcomes at St. Mary's are better than expected in these areas. St. Mary's also received the Healthgrades Excellence Award for critical care.
For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide, and assessed hospital performance relative to each of 32 common conditions and procedures. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital's quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5 star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3 star (not statistically different from expected), and 1 star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
