The Building Blocks for Children program is a mobile, full-service health screening program comprised of the critical healthcare components that establish a solid foundation for children. It is available through the collaboration of several community partnerships.
The foundation of the Building Blocks for Children program is free immunizations offered to children to help prevent the onset of illnesses that have the potential for long-term effects. Children are required to be immunized before attending school (with exceptions due to religious beliefs) and many families without health insurance must pay out-of-pocket for these shots. The free immunizations are well received by the underserved population.
Hearing helps a child develop speech appropriately, learn in school and keeps them safe. The Building Blocks for Children program has an established partnership with the Ear Foundation to provide equipment, training and services to provide hearing screening.
Every Little Tooth Counts is an innovative program brought to the Building Blocks for Children program in partnership with St. Vincent de Paul. The preventative oral health program provides free dental screenings and fluoride varnish treatments to young children. Building Blocks for Children partners with local dentists who provide dental intervention services at a discounted rate. Children identified as requiring intervention are referred for additional services at a discounted rate.
It's important that children's vision is assessed throughout their youth. Not only does clear vision enable them to see the world and keep them safe from accidents, but it's also essential for learning and the development of social skills. Through a partnership with the Amblyopic Foundation, the Building Blocks for Children program offers age appropriate computerized vision screening.
