Mercy Gilbert Sees Large Spike in Birth Rates

Dignity Health Mercy Gilbert Medical Center announced today that September will be a record breaking month for births at the hospital. Nearly 400 babies have been born at Mercy Gilbert this month, a record high in the hospital’s 9-year history. The past record took place in March with 335 babies born in one month at the hospital.

Mercy Gilbert medical staff is attributing the spike in birth rates to a number of birthing options the hospital has implemented including nurse midwife services.

“Mercy Gilbert has become a birthing center of choice for parents,” says Tammy Passante, RN, manager of maternal child health at Mercy Gilbert.  “We have introduced new birthing options for families in addition to the expert and compassionate care our medical team has always strived to provide.”

Some medical experts predicted a surge of babies to be born over the weekend during the harvest moon. It’s believed that the harvest moon and lunar effect can cause expecting mothers to go into labor. Mercy Gilbert delivered 19 babies over the weekend, an average number for the hospital.

“Because the harvest moon’s gravitational pull can affect amniotic fluid in much the same way it affects water in the sea, there was a chance more women would give birth during the harvest moon,” says Passante.
