Am I a Good Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

Use our BMI Calculator Below to Find Out if You are a Candidate
for Weight Loss Surgery

* Your category is based on federal guidelines for healthy weight.

Patient selection for weight loss surgery is based on the National Institutes of Health criteria:

  • 100 pounds or more above ideal body weight or a BMI of 40 or above
  • BMI of 35 or greater with one or more obesity-related health conditions

The individual in the example above would be classified as morbidly obese and would meet the initial eligibility for weight loss surgery.

This calculator is not intended to replace the evaluation of a health care professional.

Everyone is Different but Weight Loss Surgery Could be an Option if You:

  • Are more than 75 pounds over your ideal body weight
  • Have a BMI of 30 or above
  • Have a BMI between 30 and 40 with comorbid conditions such as high blood pressure, sleep apnea, heart disease or diabetes
  • Have tried multiple weight loss programs without lasting success
  • Would like to lose weight for health reasons
  • Are prepared to make a lifelong commitment to the dietary, exercise and behavioral changes necessary for success
  • Are mentally and emotionally prepared to make lifelong lifestyle changes
  • Have the support system you need to succeed

If you answered yes to the above, then Surgical Weight Loss might be right for you.

Is Weight Loss Surgery an Option For You?

Changing your life starts with a simple first step: determining if weight loss surgery is right for you. Once you’ve made that decision, it may feel as if a tremendous weight has already been lifted. Weight loss surgery is not cosmetic and should not be considered based on simply “looking better.” There are risks with any surgery, so this alternative should be an option only after serious discussion with your physician.

The First Step to Weight Loss

If surgery is the right treatment for you the best way to get started is to schedule an initial consultation and a comprehensive medical evaluation. We will provide you with the information you need to make an educated decision on whether surgery is right for you or another weight loss option. We will discuss the risks and benefits to determine which surgical option is best for you: gastric bypass, gastric banding, duodenal switch or a sleeve gastrectomy.
