Program Highlights

Our program became part of the Creighton University-Arizona Health Education Alliance with the merger of GME programs from Creighton University, Maricopa Integrated Health System and Saint Joseph’s Medical Center. These three institutions are all now under the sponsorship of Creighton University School of Medicine. The commitment of this Alliance is to have programs that are at the forefront of advanced medical education, research and training of new generations of physicians to improve the health outcomes of our community, state and nation.

The cardiovascular disease fellowship at Creighton University SOM St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is a three-year program that will offer comprehensive training for clinical cardiologists in a dynamic environment. These fellows, who should possess a passion for learning, will provide high-quality, compassionate care to our patients. The skills learned during this fellowship will benefit fellows for the lifetime of their careers.

The fellowship curriculum has been designed to provide fellows with inpatient and outpatient experience with patients suffering from various acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases. Fellows will also acquire extensive experience in both noninvasive and invasive cardiac procedures, and will gain knowledge outside the clinical setting by attending core curriculum lectures to enhance their basic cardiovascular knowledge and fundamental clinical skills. The training environment is a culture which promotes reliance on evidence-based medicine; upon completion of the fellowship, fellows should be able to think critically and analyze patients thoughtfully. They are expected to carry these experiences forward in their careers, becoming dedicated clinicians and knowledgeable educators for their patients, staff, and communities.

St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is a tertiary referral hospital that evaluates and treats a large number of cardiac patients. We have the technology, resources, and know-how to perform cutting-edge cardiac procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacements and percutaneous left atrial appendage closures. Our expert cardiologists are specialists in both invasive and noninvasive procedures, and the breadth of their expertise is vast. These respected physicians are dedicated educators who will offer a wealth of knowledge and experience to these fellows in a collegial, collaborative environment.

Our clinical rotations emphasize fellow autonomy in clinical decision-making with direct faculty supervision. Fellows in our program gain independence in clinical judgment and procedural skills with this interaction. Being exposed to patients with wide spectrum of cardiovascular disease, the fellows will gain the necessary knowledge, expertise, and confidence to function as independent Cardiovascular Consultants by the end of their training.
