Rotations

The structured rotations are monthly blocks dedicated to a single or multiple cardiovascular areas each with their own curricula. In addition there is a weekly ½ day outpatient continuity clinic for the entire 3 year program. The rotations have been structured to include one or more COCATS 4 areas and multiple rotations may contribute to acquisition of clinical competency in some areas.

  • Inpatient / Critical Care - provides training in consultative and critical cardiovascular care.

  • Cardiac Catheterization - provides training in the indications, contraindications, and performance diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterization procedures.

  • Echocardiography - provides training in the performance and interpretation of various echocardiograms including transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography.

  • Electrophysiology - provides training in cardiac electrophysiology, electrophysiology procedures, EKG interpretation, Stress Testing, and interpretation of Ambulatory monitoring. Also provided outpatient and inpatient consultative services.

  • Nuclear Medicine/CT/MR - provides training in indications and interpretation of cardiac CT, cardiac MRI and cardiac nuclear studies and performance of cardiac nuclear studies.

  • Heart Failure - provides training in diagnosis and treatment of various forms of heart failure including advanced therapy options and transplantation.

  • Adult Congenital Heart Disease/Pulmonary Hypertension - provides training in diagnosis and treatment of various forms of adult congenital heart disease and pulmonary hypertension.

  • Vascular - provides training in peripheral vascular disease including non-invasive and invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

  • Research/Elective - provides training in research and electives based upon individual fellow’s career goals. This may include additional months of the above structured rotations or customized rotations.

  • Outpatient Continuity Clinic - provides training in ambulatory, consultative, and longitudinal cardiovascular care with focus on preventive medicine.

The rotational sequence through the 3 years is structured to provide a broad based approach in the first to second year to facilitate development of Level I competency. All fellows will achieve Level II in echocardiography. The second and particularly the third year schedules allow more elective time for each fellow to acquire level II and perhaps level III competency in certain areas, including additional time for those with a greater academic interest in research.
