Words From St. Joseph's Internal Medicine Residency Program Director

Dear Candidates,

The profession of medicine will challenge you to make a lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.  As you apply for residency training, you are just in the beginning stages of the exciting, enriching, and rewarding career that awaits you. Our program is committed to supporting you as you develop to your highest potential. As Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, I am deeply committed to ensuring that all our residents develop competency in all the skills they will need to be successful in the rapidly changing field of medicine, while helping each resident attain his or her individual career goals.

Our program mission is to train compassionate and clinically outstanding physicians who will provide the highest quality, evidence-based medical care and advance the practice of medicine through excellence in patient care, education, research, and quality improvement.  We provide an enriching, collaborative environment that offers a multitude of opportunities for residents and medical students to become lifelong learners and physician trailblazers who will lead the nation in changing healthcare to meet the needs of the communities we serve.

As you review our WebPages to familiarize yourself with our Academic Medical Center and training program, I invite you to pay particular attention to the features that make our program unique:

  • Our residents provide patient-centered, tertiary-level care for a diverse patient population in a variety of inpatient, outpatient, and elective clinical settings; a fully-equipped, state of the art simulation center; community outreach and patient home care settings; and in Centers of Medical Excellence (Lung Disease and Transplant, Cancer Care, Cardiovascular Care, Hepatology Care, Women’s Health, and Neurology) ;
  • Our program allows residents to design their own course of training within the tracks of Primary Care, Hospitalist Medicine, Fellowship, and/or Leadership.  Partnership with Arizona State University allows all residents to participate in leadership and management courses of study;
  • Our residents have achieved a high level of success both during and after residency: they have 100% board pass rate for 2 years in a row, have a 83% fellowship match and 100% job match rate in the past 3 years, have presented at numerous regional and national scientific meetings and been recognized for local, state‐wide and national awards;
  • Our faculty exemplify Humankindness!, are deeply committed to teaching and the success of each resident, and through affiliation with Creighton University School of Medicine and the University of Arizona College of Medicine, have attained assistant, associate, or full professor academic appointments at one or both institutions;
  • Our highly-structured curriculum, designed by the program’s Resident Education Specialist, program director, and faculty, is rigorous, innovative, learner-centered, and focused on high yield, clinically relevant, frequently-tested topics;
  • Our comprehensive educational program trains physicians not only in the skills, attitudes, and knowledge required of competent and compassionate physicians, it also supports the continuous development of personal well-being, work-life balance, and personal goal attainment through individual coaching and our Well-Being and Personal Best Program.

We the faculty, residents, staff and administrative leadership at St. Joseph’s feel privileged to train the outstanding physicians of the future.  We hope you will join us on this exciting journey.
