Resident Tracks

Tracks

Residents are encouraged in their PGY 1 or 2 year to select one of the following tracks:

Hospitalists Track

Residents on the hospitalist track may select electives that will help to prepare them for a career in hospital medicine. For example, the Hospital Medicine elective gives residents the opportunity to manage their own panel of inpatients under the supervision of an academic hospitalist attending. They may gain additional experience in general medicine consultations, peri-operative management, inpatient procedures, and quality improvement.

Primary Care Track

Residents who are interested in primary care may gain additional experience in the ambulatory care setting. For example, they may rotate with community faculty members in their private practices and gain familiarity with the business aspect of medicine. They will also participate in the CATCH program, which coordinates home visits to underserved patients, and quality improvement projects centered in the ambulatory clinic.

Subspecialty/Research Track

Residents who are interested in pursuing a subspecialty fellowship will be paired with a faculty mentor in that specialty. They will be mentored to conduct research and create networks with subspecialists in their chosen fields. They may also do additional rotations in their chosen subspecialty at other institutions, e.g. University of Arizona, Mayo Clinic, Creighton University, or other institutions of interest.

Leadership Track

Residents who select the leadership track will gain experience in the administrative aspect of medicine. They will have the opportunity to sit on hospital-wide committees and be expected to engage in quality improvement and/or patient safety projects. They will also gain additional experience working in interdisciplinary teams. Opportunity exists to earn an advanced degree (e.g. MBA, MPH, Master in Healthcare, Master in Healthcare Ethics) through our affiliations with the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and Creighton University
