How To Apply To St. Joseph's Surgery Residency

St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, General Surgery Residency Program is a five-year program and accepts 3 categorical first-year residents and 3 preliminary first-year residents.  

We engage the residents in a planned curriculum delivered via lectures and conferences, simulation, online course materials, at bedside and in the operating room during structured rotations. Considerable experience is gained in the management of all areas of general surgery, including abdomen, breast, vascular system, endocrine, trauma, and critical care. Experience is also provided in pediatric surgery, endoscopy, colorectal surgery, thoracic surgery, minimally invasive surgery, transplantation. Hands-on training in robotic surgery has been incorporated into our robust simulation curriculum.

General Surgery Program Applicant Requirements

  • Completed ERAS application before December 1
  • Must have completed Step 1 with minimum score 225
  • Must have completed Step 2 with minimum score 230
  • No more than 2 years out of medical school
  • 4 letters of recommendation, at least 2 from surgical faculty

Applicants are evaluated based on multiple criteria including (but not limited to): personal statement, grades, research experience, USMLE scores, letters of recommendation, extracurricular pursuits, etc.

All international graduates must adhere to the additional following requirements for consideration:

  • We require at least one year of hands-on US clinical experience (observorship or research experience is not acceptable).
  • We accept valid J-1’s but do not provide visa sponsorship.
  • Must hold a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and have passed the CSA exam.
