Anathea Powell, MD, FACS, is a colon and rectal surgeon with the University of Arizona Cancer Center at Dignity Health/St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.
Dr. Powell’s expertise includes all colon, rectal and anal conditions, including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, and other anal problems. She is trained in endoscopy, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, as well as transanal surgery. She is board certified in general surgery. She is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
Dr. Powell received her medical degree from Boston University. She completed her general surgery residency at New York University and her colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. She also completed a combined clinical and research fellowship in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Institute. Following her general surgery residency, she spent four years as a general surgeon for the Indian Health Service and has a longstanding commitment to the underserved.
Dr. Powell believes that high quality, technologically advanced, and patient-centered surgical care should be available to all patients. She believes in a multidisciplinary, team-based approach that focuses on the patient’s unique needs and goals in the development of a treatment plan. Dr. Powell believes straightforward communication and mutual trust best facilitate the patient-surgeon partnership. She is especially committed to providing patients and their families with the knowledge they need to make decisions about their care.
In her personal time, Dr. Powell is a longtime athlete. She has competed in every distance of triathlon, including two Ironman distance races, as well as open water swimming events, marathons and cycling races. She currently races triathlon and cycling for local teams in the valley. When not operating, she can usually be found swimming, biking, or running, or throwing tennis balls to her two Labrador retrievers.
