St. Joseph's Maternity Outreach Mobile Unit (MOMobile) is a fully equipped vehicle for maternity care, providing early and continuous prenatal care to women in Arizona communities.
Launched in 1995 as a collaboration between St. Joseph’s Hospital and the March of Dimes, the program provides consistent prenatal care for women with uncomplicated pregnancies, many of whom may not otherwise receive medical care. MOMobile also provides health education to all patients who visit.
Staffed by a nurse practitioner, midwives, nurses and an outreach coordinator, the MOMobile spends five hours a day in various locations throughout the Phoenix area. Hundreds of women are seen each year by its staff and most of the women then deliver their babies at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
The traveling clinic has two fully-equipped exam rooms, an ultrasound machine, an external fetal monitor and a laboratory. Services available include pregnancy tests, referrals, and education.

In Arizona and throughout the United States, disorders related to preterm birth and low birth weight are a leading cause of death. To help address this issue, the MOMobile provides comprehensive prenatal care to low-income women at little or no cost.
The impact of this program has been outstanding. The average birth weight of babies born to MOMobile patients is 7 lbs., 7 oz., which is higher than the state average and two pounds over the mark for a low weight baby.
