Non-Invasive Treatment

The majority of patients who come to St. Mary’s Spine Center don’t require a surgical procedure. We work very hard to treat you first without surgery and then review all the options. After a comprehensive diagnostic session, the appropriate Spine Center specialist will manage your care.

The Least Invasive Approach

Non-operative therapies are the “backbone” of our care and we believe in using the least invasive approach possible to give you the relief you need. Our non-invasive treatments include:

  • Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation:Physiatrists treat musculoskeletal and neurological injuries, helping you regain spinal function and mobility and improve your overall quality of life.

  • Spinal Blocks/Injections: Spinal blocks or nerve blocks are often used to diagnose and treat back or neck pain. Diagnostic injections are given to pinpoint what may be causing symptoms and identify the pain generator.  Therapeutic injections reduce pain and inflammation at the source of the problem.

  • Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM):An increasing amount of medical literature supports this century-old manual healing approach. OMM helps boost your body’s natural ability to heal itself and can be an effective component in treating injuries. OMM is often used in conjunction with other mainstream treatments.

  • Physical Therapy:Manual therapy, exercise and education can help you improve flexibility and strength, stabilize your spine, and relieve pain. St. Mary’s Medical Center has a complete PT department with many skilled physical therapists to help you ease your back pain before and after surgery.

  • Acupuncture: This Eastern healing tradition is often used in combination with other treatments and proves useful in treating muscle and tendon injuries.
