Second Opinions

Second opinions can be common patient requests.

How does Dignity Health Medical Network handle these requests? What are the patients' rights?

A patient can request a second opinion when:

  • They are considering surgery and want to know what another specialist might think.
  • They receive a diagnosis or plan of care for a condition that is serious or life threatening.
  • Their condition is not improving within an appropriate period of time.
  • The patient has attempted to follow the plan of care or consulted with their Primary Care Provider (PCP) regarding serious concerns about their diagnosis or plan of care.

Other guidelines include:

  • The second opinion request must be with a similar specialist.

  • If the patient requests a second opinion about care from a PCP, the second opinion must be from another Dignity Health Medical Network PCP.

  • If the patient requests a second opinion from a specialist within the Dignity Health Medical Network network, the request will be reviewed through the regular review process.

    • The patient's PCP or the original specialist can make the request.

  • If the patient requests a second opinion from a specialist outside of the Dignity Health Medical Network network, the patient must call the health plan directly using the number on the back of their ID card.

    • The patient can make this request directly through their health plan.

  • If the two opinions differ, the patient has the right to a third opinion.

  • If the two opinions agree, and a non-Dignity Health Medical Network provider renders one opinion, the patient must return to the Dignity Health Medical Network provider for continued care.
