The Family Medicine Residency Program Faculty Attendings
Dr. Col graduated with a medical degree from USC in 1986 and went on to complete his family practice residency here in Merced. His professional interests include sports medicine (Dr. Col has completed the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine), dermatology, and obstetrics. Dr. Col is the team physician for the Merced High School sports department. He has been a faculty member for over 23 years and is board certified in family medicine. He is also a member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine.
Dr. Kano received his undergraduate degree from UC Davis and his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed his residency training in Merced in 1994 and decided to stay on as a faculty member. He has also completed a fellowship in Faculty Development at UC San Francisco. Dr. Kano is the Medical Director for the Hospice in Merced and the Medical Director for the Family Medicine Center, where the residents see their continuity patients. His outside interests include cooking and spending time with his wife and twin boys.
Dr. Paik-Tesch began teaching at Mercy after finishing his residency here in 1994. He graduated from medical school at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and completed a fellowship in faculty development at UCSF. He has been the Program Director of the Residency Program for the last 5 years. In addition, he is also the Medical Director for several of the local nursing home centers, as well as co-director for Hinds Hospice of Merced. His special interests include geriatric medicine and HIV/AIDs. His hobbies include camping, bicycling, Nordic skiing, playing with his dogs, and watching political debates and/or discussions.
Dr. Paskin is a board certified family physician with added qualifications in geriatric medicine. He attended UC Irvine for undergraduate studies and Autonomous University of Guadalajara, Mexico for medical school. He is a member of the California Academy of Family Practice, the American Board of Family Medicine, and the American Geriatrics Society. He has served as chairman to the hospital's Credential Committee and Department of Family Practice twice. He is also the past Board Director of the Merced-Mariposa IPA, Merced-Mariposa Foundation of Medical Care, Mercy Hospital, and St. Joseph's Regional Health System. Dr. Paskin is a 1983 alumnus of the program and became a faculty member in 2007.
Dr. Reid is a graduate from the National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland. He did his internship and residency at the Hospital of St. Raphael in New Haven, CT. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Professional roles that Dr. Reid has held include being Chief of Staff for Mercy Hospital in 1982 and 1994 and President of the Merced-Mariposa County Medical Society in 1984.
Dr. Schill was born in Mountain View, CA. She went to UC San Diego for both her undergraduate and medical studies. After graduation from medical school, she came to Merced for residency, where she was the co-chief resident during her third year. She joined MFA, Inc. after residency and has been a full-time teacher since then. Recently, she has taken on the role of Associate Program Director for the program and has done wonders. Her special interest is in obstetrics, pediatrics, and women’s health.
Dr. Shabbir is a board certified family physician who completed his doctoral degree from the Government College in Daska, Pakistan. He is also a graduate from our program and was the co-chief during his third year of training. His family was originally from Florida, but because of his passion for teaching he stayed in Merced and joined the faculty in 2009.
Mr. Silveira was born in Merced, CA and has been a lifelong resident. He went to California State University, Fresno for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Upon completing his Master’s degree in Social Work, he spent two more years completing post graduate work to receive his LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) to provide therapy and counseling to the community. He has extensive experience in Hospice and Mental Health. He is a member of NASW (National Association of Social Workers) and STFM (Society of Teachers of Family Medicine). His hobbies include camping and cooking. He likes to serve his community and has been a member of the Merced Breakfast Lions Club for over 25 years.
Dr. Sphabmixay is a board certified family medicine physician. He completed his undergraduate study at UC San Diego and received his doctoral degree from Ross University. Dr. Sphabmixay joined the faculty in 2010 after completing his residency with us. He also serves as the Secretary of Treasury for the Merced-Mariposa County Medical Society. He has a special interest in geriatrics, obstetrics, and pediatrics, and adolescent care.
Originally from Sacramento, CA, Dr. Sugimoto attended UC Davis for his medical training. He completed his residency training here at Mercy Medical Center in 1996. He joined the faculty after graduation and has been here ever since. He is married to Twylla Cox-Sugimoto who is also a graduate of the program. They have two boys, Kyle and Garret. Dr. Sugimoto’s passion for teaching includes the ER, critical care, and obstetrics.
Dr. Vierra is a board certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist. He graduated from Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood, IL. He spent his first two years of residency at Baylor College of Medicine and third and fourth years at Danbury Hospital, where he was the co-chief resident. He has been a faculty member teaching our residents Obstetrics/Gynecology since 1991.
Dr. Lesley Xiong is the eldest of 8 girls and grew up in Merced. After graduating from Golden Valley High School in Merced, she attended UC Davis and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Cell Biology. Thereafter, she obtained her Medical Doctorate from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC and completed UC Davis’ Valley Consortium for Medical Education Family Medicine Residency Program in Modesto, Ca. She is currently a Family Medicine physician with Merced Faculty Associates Medical Group and a teaching faculty of our local UC Davis Merced Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Xiong states, “It is an honor to be serving the residence of my hometown Merced, CA.”
