Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Areas

There are multiple areas in the hospital that we need the help of volunteers, including:

  • Gift Shop
  • Information and Reception Desks
  • Mercy Outpatient Surgery
  • Patient support, including:
    • Critical Care (UC Merced students only)
    • Emergency Department (UC Merced students only)
    • Family Birth Center
    • Mercy Cancer Center
    • Patient care units
    • Surgery recovery
You can make a difference at Mercy by volunteering. The volunteers of Mercy Medical Center play a very important part in our healing ministry, supporting our staff and providing a “personal touch” for our patients and visitors.

Types of Volunteers

Active Members

Volunteers at Mercy are individuals who provide a variety of services in the hospital. Active members contribute a minimum of four hours a week, attend one reorientation per year, and complete additional annual training requirements as necessary for their work assignments.

High School Student Volunteers

The Student Volunteer Program is designed for high school students who are at least 15 years of age. These volunteers serve primarily as receptionists at the Information Desk. Student volunteers are required to have permission from a parent or guardian, 2 letters of recommendations, and donate at least 4 hours each week to the hospital.

Music Program Volunteers

Mercy’s Music Program is seeking compassionate, community oriented, volunteer musicians to play for patients in their rooms. If you are interested in being a part of this program, please contact Leslie Hendricks by email at [email protected]. You may also contact Kim Heyer at 209.769.5193. Please provide your name, e-mail, phone number, and what instrument(s) you play. Also include how many hours per week or month you are available to play.

Pet Therapy Volunteers

Our Pet Therapy volunteers provide special cheer to our patients by sharing their “best friend” with the hospital. Certified canines and their owners visit with consenting patients who value the unconditional love a pet can provide. Therapy Pets must undergo training and pass certification before being permitted to visit our patients. For more information, please call 209.564.5387.

Volunteer Applications

Complete your application, as well as the background disclosure form and email it to [email protected] or bring it to one of the volunteer desks.

The hospital is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so there are times available to fit almost anyone’s schedule. If you have any questions about becoming a volunteer, call the volunteer coordinator at (209) 564-4264 or send an email to [email protected].
