I chose St. Joe's because I understood that Dr. Ekambaram and Dr. Singh were committed to providing excellent training and learning experiences while also emphasizing a culture of wellbeing and healthy work-life balance. Our inpatient psychiatry rotations at an underserved mental hospital, along with the numerous opportunities to rotate at Napa State Hospital, truly set St. Joe's apart and give residents exposure to the full breadth of psychiatric pathology. I could not be happier to be a part of the inaugural class of the Psychiatric residency programs at St. Joe's, and I am excited to help the program continue to grow.

As members of this program's inaugural class, my co-residents and I are lucky to play an important role in improving the Central Valley's access to much-needed psychiatric care. In addition to training in the community of Stockton, we also learn to manage the most severe and acute presentations of mental health disorders at Napa State Hospital, which houses forensic patients. As a Bay Area native whose formative medical training was limited to an urban setting, I am excited to broaden my horizons here while also remaining close to my family in San Francisco!

Why Did You Choose St. Joe's? There are numerous reasons I decided to choose St. Joe's. The excellent mix of urban and suburban populations, as well as the chance to work with the underserved, is something that really drew me to this program. Working at Napa State Hospital, one of the oldest state hospitals in California, provides an amazing learning opportunity to work with patients in a forensic setting. We are able to gain exposure to a wide range of psychiatric pathologies. Another bonus for me is the central location of Stockton. We are 2.5 hours away from Lake Tahoe, 2 hours away from Yosemite, and only 1.5 hours away from the Bay Area. I feel blessed to be able to stay close to family and friends in beautiful California.
