St. John’s Regional Medical Center Celebrates 1000th Robotic Assisted Surgery Milestone

Advanced surgical robotic system performs complex procedures with unmatched precision

OXNARD, CA, August 1, 2018 – St. John’s Regional Medical Center (SJRMC), a Dignity Health Central Coast hospital, is excited to announce that the 1000th robotic assisted surgery has been successfully completed. The 1000th case was performed on Thursday, June 19, 2018 by cardiothoracic surgeon, James McPherson, MD.

“Robotic surgery allows me to see what is inside the chest through smaller incisions. Patients benefit from an operation that is more precise and less painful,” said Dr. McPherson. “It is a game changer.”

SJRMC surgeons and surgical team together performed 1000 robotic assisted surgery procedures over the course of six years, when the da Vinci® Si Surgical System was first introduced at SJRMC. The da Vinci® serves as an extension of the surgeon’s hands. This technology provides our surgeons with unmatched precision that enables a minimally invasive approach for many complex procedures.

“St. John’s Regional Medical Center continues to be at the forefront of technology and programs, and we celebrate this significant milestone,” says Brian Tuai, MD, Medical Director of Robotic Surgery at SJRMC. “I’m honored to work with a highly skilled team and proud of their ongoing commitment to excellent patient care, safety, and service.”

Benefits of this robotic assisted surgery can include faster recovery, shorter hospital stays, less blood loss, less pain, less risk of infection, smaller incisions with less scarring, and a quicker return to daily activities. Procedures performed with the da Vinci® include but are not limited to colectomy, prostatectomy, hysterectomy, cholecystectomy, rectopexy, hernia and mitral valve repairs, and lung resection.

Robotic assisted minimally invasive surgery is the current gold standard in urology and quickly becoming the gold standard in cardiovascular surgery, gynecology, otorhinolaryngology and general surgery. The da Vinci® System is the most technologically advanced surgical platform available today. It provides surgeons with ultra-precise instrument movement and 3-D views of the surgical field.
