If you have a gynecologic condition and need to have your uterus removed, our doctors at Dignity Health can provide the expertise you need. The surgery to remove the uterus is called a hysterectomy. Our goal at Dignity Health is to provide high-quality care immersed in humankindness. Our culture puts a strong focus on your physical, mental, and spiritual needs.
A hysterectomy will provide the relief you need from pain and other symptoms. If you have been diagnosed with endometriosis, uterine prolapse, chronic pelvic pain, cancer, fibroids, and chronic, heavy periods, our specialists may recommend a hysterectomy.
Please note: After your hysterectomy is performed, you will no longer have your period or be able to get pregnant.
What to Expect from a Hysterectomy at Dignity Health
Your doctor will explain the various hysterectomy procedures available at Dignity Health. If you are scheduled for a partial hysterectomy, your doctor will remove your uterus but leave your cervix. If you are scheduled for a total hysterectomy, your doctor will remove your uterus and cervix during the surgery.
You will undergo either an abdominal hysterectomy or a laparoscopic hysterectomy. The preferred method is laparoscopic hysterectomy because recovery and healing are much quicker.
Your Dignity Health specialist will explain the risks of hysterectomy, including bleeding, blood clots, and nerve and tissue damage, which may occur before your procedure. These risks are further increased with an abdominal hysterectomy.
After a hysterectomy, you may stay a few days in the hospital. A full recovery takes three to six weeks.
