What a Children's Trauma Center Offers

Our Pediatric Level III Trauma Center has the following resources to treat moderately injured children:

  • An emergency doctor and a general surgeon available to provide care 24 hours a day
  • A pediatric emergency room area, pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), and medical equipment appropriate for children
  • A surgeon in the emergency room within 30 minutes of being notified that a patient is on the way
  • A surgeon trained specifically to treat pediatric trauma

What to Expect from the Dignity Health - St. Rose Dominican Level III Trauma Center

When you arrive at our pediatric Level III Trauma Center, your child will receive immediate care. This includes:

  • Assessment: A nurse or doctor will decide how to proceed.
  • Stabilization: Doctors stabilize severe injuries and transfer your child to a Level I or Level II Trauma Center if needed.
  • Resuscitation: Health care providers will make sure your child can breathe, check the eyes for response, remove your child’s clothing and keep him or her warm, check vital signs, and insert an IV, if necessary.
  • Pediatric intensive care: Ventilators, beds, cribs, and cardiorespiratory equipment are the right size for children.

Doctors in a Level III Trauma Center must maintain their qualifications to treat children in emergency situations. They undergo frequent evaluations. Level III Trauma Centers also offer continuing education programs for medical teams. This all helps ensure children receive the best care possible.
