In My Own Words

Dr. Hong is a fellowship-trained, board certified foot and ankle surgeon.  He earned Bachelor's degree in biological science from University of Illinois at Chicago and Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago.  He completed an extensive three year foot and ankle reconstructive surgical residency at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He then went on to complete fellowship training in sports medicine and surgery of the foot and ankle at Palo Alto Medical Foundation in Palo Alto, California.  During this unique sports medicine fellowship training (one of the five podiatric sports medicine fellowship programs in the nation), he gained experiences in advanced training in surgical techniques involving ankle arthroscopy, tendon repair particularly Achilles and Peroneal, Lisfranc's and talar osteochondral injuries while treating all levels of athletes including elite level professional athletes.  With seeing approximately 2000 unique patients in a high volume clinic consisting of predominantly runners, soccer players, basketball players, volleyball players and dancers he gained profound knowledge in how to treat athletes with foot and ankle ailments.  Most importantly, his main focus is in treating and returning the athletes back to their desired level of activities as fast and safe as possible.   As a lifelong athlete himself playing basketball, volleyball, soccer and swimming, now his interest is in competing in triathlon, he knows how frustrating and detrimental sports injuries are to every level of athletes from his personal experiences. Dr. Hong was also involved in research projects, now pending publication, focusing mainly on plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy.  He also pursued a European Fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery and worked with renown orthopedic and trauma surgeons in Germany and England. He then completed foot and ankle arthroscopy course in Academic Medical Center, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. These experiences with international surgical techniques and medical cultures surely provided him in-depth understanding of the current concepts of various approaches to many foot and ankle pathologies.
