In My Own Words

Dr. Matthew J. Seidel is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a Fellow of the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is a member of the Arizona Medical Society, the Connective Tissue Oncology Society and the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society. Dr. Seidel is a native Phoenician. He attended Shadow Mountain High School and then earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from University of Arizona. There, he was involved in research concerning the chemical interactions of metal with organic substances. This led to his first publication, and sparked a continuing interest in research. Dr. Seidel then earned a Master's Degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Toledo. While there, he studied juvenile diabetes and the biologic events leading to this disease. His Master's thesis involved creating new medications with the aim of preventing the onset of diabetes. Matthew earned his MD from the Ohio State University College of Medicine, and spent two years in Columbus, OH where he was chosen as one of a few students to complete their third and fourth clinical years at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic. While at Ohio State, Dr. Seidel was twice awarded the Roessler research fellowship for research exploring new anesthetics for cardiac surgery. Following Medical School, Dr. Seidel completed his orthopaedic surgery training locally at the Phoenix Orthopaedic Residency program based out of Maricopa County Hospital, the Phoenix VA Hospital, and Children's Rehabilitation Services Clinic. In addition to the extensive experience in Orthopaedic trauma, Dr. Seidel developed special interests in musculoskeletal oncology, as well as joint replacement surgery. In 2005, Dr. Seidel completed a one-year Musculoskeletal Oncology fellowship at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX. The primary focus of his training was the surgical treatment of adult and pediatric patients with cancers arising in the bones and soft tissues of the pelvis and limbs, and the treatment of skeletal metastatic disease. An important part of this training involved limb salvage surgery and major joint and limb reconstruction. During this fellowship, Dr. Seidel completed two major research projects concerning cancerous cartilage tumors, and presented them both at national orthopaedic meetings.
