Dignity Health Heart & Vascular Institute Hospitals and Surgeons Top Regional List in California Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Quality Ratings

Posted in:
Three Dignity Health Heart & Vascular Institute affiliated surgeons in Sacramento had “better than average” operative mortality rates among 276 surgeons who performed isolated CABG surgery in California from 2015 – 2016

Sacramento, CA, April 3, 2019Cardiac surgeons Dr. John Dein, Dr. Richard Kaplon and Dr. Henry Zhu were the only three surgeons out of 276 cardiac surgeons in the state to be statistically rated “better than expected” for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) operative mortality according to a state report. All three physicians are affiliated with the Dignity Health Heart & Vascular Institute of Greater Sacramento, practicing at Dignity Health Mercy General Hospital and/or Dignity Health Mercy San Juan Medical Center.

Mercy General Hospital was one of only two California hospitals in the report (2016) that achieved a “better than expected” quality rating for coronary bypass graft (CABG) mortality or survival rate. The state average was 2.37% compared to Mercy General’s average of 0.76%.

Mercy General Hospital is the only hospital to achieve this quality rating for two years in a row (2015 and 2016). Additionally, though not statistically different, Mercy San Juan Medical Center’s CABG mortality rate was 1.21%, also below the California average rate. These findings were reported in the California Report on Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery 2015 – 2016: Hospital and Surgeon Data, based on data collected by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development’s (OSHPD) California CABG Outcomes Reporting Program (CCORP).

CABG surgery is the most common surgical procedure for treating coronary artery disease, according to the report. Coronary bypass surgery is an open heart surgery that restores blood flow to the heart muscle by diverting the flow of blood around a section of a blocked or partially blocked artery in the heart.

Mercy General Hospital has the largest volume of CABG surgeries from Central to Northern California, among the 126 hospitals in the report.

“The findings in this report are significant with better than average survival rates for our physicians and hospitals that perform high volumes of CABG procedures,” said Dr. Allen Morris, medical director, cardiovascular medicine. “We are grateful to our highly experienced team of physicians, nurses, and staff who together achieve the best outcomes for our patients.”

The Office of Statewide Health & Planning published the California Coronary Outcomes (CCORP) report in March, 2019. The report covers hospital CABG outcomes (126 hospitals) for calendar year 2016 and physician specific outcomes for combined calendar years 2015 – 2016.
