Introducing the Clinic of the Future
Expanding Access to Care in Citrus Heights.
Care of the Future
For the past 50 years, Dignity Health and Mercy Medical Group have delivered high quality, compassionate care to the people of Citrus Heights, even as their numbers have increased by over 400%. That’s why we too are growing to meet the healthcare needs of the community.
Citrus Heights Medical Office Building
The new Citrus Heights Medical Office Building, opening in spring 2019, will be no ordinary facility. It is literally building on the success of an exciting “Clinic of the Future” pilot program. The intention was to take a fresh and evidence-based look at how to improve workflow and patient experience from the ground up.
It All Started by Bringing People Together
We assembled a multidisciplinary team of those who provide care every day. Thirty-five doctors, nurses and front-line staff provided extensive input and conducted over 500 hours of observation and data collection. They tracked all the routines and movements that go into serving patients. They looked at every component and patient touchpoint from start to finish.
They discovered, among many things, that in many settings, nurse or assistants were going from one side of the building to the other multiple times a day to perform their duties. The team used those insights to design a new kind of space that complements the way people work best and eliminates inefficiencies.
Envision the Clinic of the Future
Concierge experience with utmost privacy.
The team even built a cardboard clinic—a physical prototype with which they could test and prove a whole new workflow. One innovative twist: patients would no longer see “behind the scenes” or walk past nurse areas on the way to exam rooms. The whole patient experience was redesigned to create a concierge-like experience and ensure utmost privacy.

At the new facility, patients will enjoy a 50% reduction in wait times. At similar clinics of the future, job satisfaction of physicians and staff also improved. The new medical building in Citrus Heights will incorporate the same innovations and become the first Clinic of the Future in northern California.
At a Glance
The new three-story Citrus Heights Medical Office Building will expand primary and specialty care services for the community. It will include the latest technologies from electronic medical records to lab services and advanced imaging equipment.
Tending to a Healthy Community
A driving force of this building project was to not just improve access to healthcare but also to enhance the City of Citrus Heights and honor its heritage.
In the short term, the building of the clinic will create many construction jobs. In the long term, the clinic will support over a hundred high paying jobs and pour many millions of dollars into the local economy.
The location of the new clinic has a precious history of its own. As a tribute to the Fountain Square Nursery that once stood there, our construction crew saved a beautiful rose bush from the site and will replant it on the grounds, alongside a commemorative plaque, to begin the garden anew.
