Left Atrial Appendage Closure


The multidisciplinary Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) team at Dignity Health Heart and Vascular Institute has extensive experience in procedural treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. The LAAC team is part of the Advanced Heart Disease Clinic and has been trained to implant the FDA-approved Watchman™ device. In addition, Dignity Health Heart and Vascular Institute is a select site for clinical research, offering the latest in device technology through access to clinical trials.

Watchman Procedure

The Watchman® Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Closure Technology is a minimally invasive, advanced therapy used to treat some patients living with Atrial Fibrilation (AF) who are at increased risk for stroke. Patients who are are implanted with a Watchman device are followed through the Atrial Fibrillation Clinic at Dignity Health Heart and Vascular Institute of Greater Sacramento.

Watchman is an umbrella-like device that is placed using a catheter. It is the only FDA-approved LAA closure device that effectively reduces stroke risk from thromboembolism from the left atrial appendage in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Atrial Fibrillation Clinic

The Watchman is one of several treatments available through the Atrial Fibrillation Clinic at Dignity Health Heart and Vascular Institute of Greater Sacramento. The clinic provides therapy options for patients with persistent or permanent AF who are difficult to treat or continue to experience symptoms.

A multidisciplinary team of electrophysiologists, cardiologists and surgeons, and nurse coordinators work together with the patient to determine the best therapy to enhance their quality of life. An RN Program Coordinator assists patients with assessments, procedure planning, monitoring, and long-term follow up.
