Premenstrual syndrome

Treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS)

Our gynecologists offer PMS treatment and prevention options to help you remain comfortable and active throughout the month. Treatment may help minimize the symptoms of PMS, allowing women to take part in their usual activities. You may find PMS relief from treatment options such as:

  • Lifestyle changes: Decreasing your intake of alcohol, caffeine, fat, and sugar and increasing your intake of complex carbohydrates may improve PMS symptoms. Regular aerobic exercise - such as running, walking, biking, and active sports - can also help. Relaxation exercises, stress management techniques, and adequate sleep (seven to nine hours per night) may be helpful, too.
  • Medication: Health care providers often recommend over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen, to treat the physical symptoms of PMS. Doctors may also prescribe antidepressant medications that boost serotonin levels in your body. Diuretic medications (sometimes called “water pills”) can relieve PMS symptoms. Birth control pills may be prescribed to regulate hormone levels.
  • Nutrient supplementation: Researchers have found taking 1200 mg of calcium, 400 mg of magnesium, and 400 mg of vitamin E daily may decrease PMS symptoms.

Some women experience a more severe form of PMS called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). If your symptoms are interfering with your daily life despite medical treatment, you may have PMDD.
