Background:  Dr. d'Amato earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Microbiology and Cell Biology from Penn State University in 1980 and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Biological Sciences at Binghamton University, State University of New York in 1986.  He received a Doctorate of Medicine from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in 1990; Dr. d'Amato then completed General Surgery internship and residency at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in 1995.  After serving as Ship's Surgeon on the USS Enterprise, Dr. d'Amato then completed a Cardiovascular and Thoracic residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1999.  Subsequently, he did extra training in advanced minimally invasive surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2006. Dr. d'Amato is certified by The American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Course Director and Instructor of Advanced Trauma Life Support,  and a Member of the Military Health Systems Strategic Partnership.  Dr. d'Amato is a  Member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.  Military Experience: CAPT d'Amato was commissioned in the Medical Corps in February 1992 through the Financial Assistance Program.  Following a General Surgery residency at Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine, he served as the Ship's Surgeon on the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) from 1995-1996, earning the Medical Department Surface Warfare Designator.  Following a rebuild of the operating room after a 5 year yard period, he implemented shipboard telemedicine and surgical endoscopy, revised the AIRLANT Standard Operating Procedures for Surgery at Sea and performed over 220 surgical cases during 200 days of work-ups.  These processes increased the clinical competence of the Medical Department and maintained shipboard manpower and command readiness. Following a Cardiovascular and Thoracic residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, he was assigned to the Naval Medical Center San Diego from July 1999 thru Dec 2002. CAPT d'Amato led the Continuous Quality Improvement Team for Cardiothoracic Surgery, resulting in measurable improved patient satisfaction, reduction in length of stay and re-admission rates. CAPT d'Amato joined the Selected Reserves and was re-Commissioned in April 2008. He served as the Assistant Officer in Charge at the Expeditionary Medical Facility (EMF)-1 Great Lakes, Det X, Youngstown, OH.  Medical team improvements resulted in 97% medical readiness for the Reserve Center earning his team the Bronze Distinction from Naval Reserve Forces.  As Course Director and Instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support, CAPT d'Amato lead over 30 officer instructors and trained more than 400 joint force medical officers as part of C4 training at the Defense Military Research and Training Institute, Ft. Sam Houston, TX.  He transferred to EMF-1 Dallas, Det S, Omaha, NE in April 2012.  Mobilized in February 2013, he served as Chief of Surgery, NATO Role 3 Multi-National Medical Unit, Kandahar, Afghanistan.  As the sole cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon he significantly contributed to the hospitals 98% patient survival rate.  In 2013, CAPT d'Amato was appointed the Senior Medical Executive, NR Expeditionary Medical Facility, Camp Pendleton, CA.  Dr. d'Amato practices cardiovascular and thoracic surgery and is Certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and The American Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons most recently held an academic appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Surgery, University of Nebraska Medical Center and Volunteer Assistant Professor of Surgery at Upstate Medical Center and currently resides  in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
