Looking at the Whole Person
Our physiatrists look at the whole person and not just one symptom or condition.
Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
A rehabilitation physician, or physiatrist, is a medical doctor who has completed residency training in the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). They specialize in diseases of the nerve, muscle, bone and brain. Physiatrists diagnose and treat injuries or illnesses that affect how you move or think. Their comprehensive approach to patient care looks at the whole person and not just one symptom or condition. Physiatrists do not perform surgery.
Mercy Medical Group’s physical medicine & rehabilitation patients benefit from a multi-disciplinary approach. Our rehabilitation physicians work closely with pain management specialists, taking advantage of different approaches in an effort to control pain while optimizing function. They also work with other specialists and primary care physicians to promote each patient’s well being.
The conditions typically seen by our rehabilitation physicians include:
- Neck and back pain
- Musculoskeletal and sports injuries
- Spinal cord injury
- Traumatic brain injury
- Electrodiagnostics including Electromyography (EMG)
- Nerve Conduction Study (NCS)
Mercy Medical Group physiatrists team with Sacramento-area Dignity Health hospitals to provide inpatient rehabilitation care in an environment that encourages recovery, independence and a positive sense of well-being. The rehabilitative team works with patients to set goals and develop an individual treatment program to help them learn self-advocacy, responsibility and independence. The primary goal is to enhance and restore functional ability for patients and optimize quality of life.
