About Dignity Health

Our Organization Today

Today, Dignity Health is dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality, and affordable patient-centered care, including special attention to the poor and underserved. In California, Dignity Health cares for millions of patients through 31 acute care hospitals, employs 42,000 people, is the largest private provider of Medi-Cal services, and provides billions of dollars of charity care, community benefit, and unpaid cost of government programs. This combination will keep us supporting our communities for years to come.

Our Mission, Vision and Values

In living our mission, we strive to deliver compassionate, high-quality, affordable health care; serve and advocate for the poor and disenfranchised; and partner with others in the communities we serve to improve the quality of life.

Our vision is to be a vibrant health care system known for service, chosen for clinical excellence, standing in partnership with patients, employees, and physicians to improve the health of all communities served. In carrying out our healing ministry, we embody the values of dignity, collaboration, justice, stewardship, and excellence.

Our History

What began as a single hospital founded on the belief that all people deserve medical care, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or circumstances, has grown into one of the largest health systems in the nation. Our story of humankindness began in 1831 in Dublin, Ireland, when the Sisters of Mercy vowed to serve people who suffer from poverty, sickness, and lack of education. In 1854, eight sisters came to San Francisco and immediately began caring for residents of a city struck by cholera, typhoid, and influenza. In 1857, they founded St. Mary’s Hospital, now the oldest continuously operating hospital in the city, and eventually one facility became many. In 1986, two congregations of the Sisters of Mercy joined their 10 hospitals together, forming Catholic Healthcare West. In 2012, we changed our name to Dignity Health to better describe what we stand for. Dignity is something that everyone is born with. To us, “Dignity” means showing respect for all people by providing excellent care and helping them lead healthy, meaningful lives.
