Overview of varicose veins
Varicose veins are enlarged or twisted blood vessels that can be seen just under the surface of your skin. You may initially notice them on your legs - where they are most common - but they appear on other body parts, too. More than half of all people over the age of 50 experience varicose veins, but condition is more common in women than in men.

Symptoms of varicose veins
You may experience some or all of the signs and symptoms of varicose veins, which include:
- Swollen, visible veins
- Aching or pain while standing
- Throbbing or cramping in the affected area
- Discolored skin around the veins
- Itchy, restless, or swollen legs
Causes of varicose veins
Your blood vessels contain natural valves that control blood flow. Varicose veins occur when one or more of these valves becomes weak or damaged. This causes blood to pool in the vein. Although some people are born with weak valves or have a family history of vein or valve diseases, aging, pregnancy, inactivity, and obesity can also contribute to the development of varicose veins.
