Coronavirus (COVID-19): latest updates and how to get care.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

As specialists in their field, our surgeons perform many procedures using minimally invasive approaches such as laparoscopic surgery or the da Vinci robotically-assisted surgery system.

Benefits of minimally invasive surgery

  • Shorter hospital stay (often one day instead of three to five)
  • Significantly less post-operative pain (over-the-counter pain medications often suffice)
  • Smaller incisions, less scarring
  • Quicker recovery and return to normal activities (often 1-2 weeks instead of 6-8 )

The da Vinci Si

The da Vinci Si is a sophisticated robotic platform designed for complex, minimally invasive surgery. Several complex surgical procedures, such as hysterectomy and hernia repair, can now be performed without open surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System.

The newest, most advanced model utilized at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center boasts the following features:

  • Dual Console allowing two surgeons to work simultaneously
  • Enhanced high-resolution 3D vision provides surgeons with an immersive experience (nlike conventional approaches, the target anatomy appears at high magnification in brilliant color and with natural depth of field)
  • Exponential smoothing of natural human hand motor functioning
  • Firefly enhanced vascular and lymphatic mapping
  • Operating room and full screen integration
  • Upgraded surgeon console and expanded fingertip controls
