What is a watchman device?

The Watchman device is a permanent implant in the left atrial appendage, to effectively reduce the risk of stroke without the risk of bleeding as a result of being on blood thinners for extended periods of time. The Watchman device provides an alternative solution for patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib), who cannot use blood thinners for long periods of time. AFib affects the hearts ability to pump blood normally and can cause blood to pool in the left atrial appendage.

What Is atrial fibrillation (AFib)?

Atrial fibrillation is a heart condition in which the upper chambers of the heart (the atria) beat irregularly and too fast because they receive extra, "abnormal" electrical signals. This causes the atria to quiver (fibrillate), affecting the heart's ability to pump blood to the body. As a result, your brain and other organs may not be getting the full blood supply they need.

What are the benefits of the watchman procedure?

  • A minimally invasive procedure, most patients are able to leave the hospital the day after surgery

  • Elimination of regular blood tests and food and drink restrictions

  • Compared to the ongoing cost of medication, this one-time procedure is less expensive in the long term
