Colon Cancer Awareness: Know the Facts

Do you know? Colorectal Cancer impacts men and women

Colorectal cancer is among the top four causes of cancer deaths in the United States. While rates have dropped for older adults in recent years, cases among people under 50 are on the rise. The good news is that colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer. Talk to your doctor or advanced practice provider about the pros and cons of each test and which is right for you. Depending on your symptoms and family history, they may recommend a specific test.

  • Myth #1: Colorectal cancer can’t be prevented.

Most colon cancers begin as non-cancerous tissue in the large intestine or rectum, called polyps. When detected early, before any symptoms are present, they can be removed before they become cancerous.

  • Myth #2: Colonoscopies hurt.

Colonoscopies aren’t typically painful as patients are generally sedated before it. Bowel prep may be uncomfortable but necessary to get accurate results. Additionally, other screening methods are available, including a virtual colonoscopy and stool tests.

  • Myth #3: Only people with symptoms should get screened

Screening means testing someone for conditions before they have symptoms. Since early colorectal cancer usually has no symptoms, screening is the only way to detect it. Most people without symptoms or known risk factors should start screening at age 45.

How do you start an uncomfortable conversation?

1: Should I see my doctor if I notice a change in bowel habits?
Changes in your stool's color, consistency, or shape could be a warning sign of colorectal cancer. But other conditions, like hemorrhoids or different bowel diseases, could cause these changes, too. Talk to your doctor if diarrhea, constipation, or other changes last longer than a few days.

2: How can I get more fiber? How much is enough?
Age and gender may influence how much fiber you should take. But as a general rule, adults on a 2,000-calorie diet should take 25 grams a day. One way to increase your fiber intake is to switch to whole grains and incorporate lentils, fruits, and vegetables into your diet.

3: What is bowel prep, and why do I need to do it before a colonoscopy?
Bowel prep before a colonoscopy cleanses and empties the colon to help the provider get a clear picture and help spot polyps or other abnormalities during the procedure.

4: How long does a colonoscopy take?
A colonoscopy typically takes less than an hour

5: Does a colonoscopy hurt? Will I be asleep during the procedure?
Colonoscopies aren’t typically painful, but you may experience some abdominal cramps. In most cases, your provider will give you medicine to make you sleepy. Patients don’t usually feel or remember the procedure once complete, but it’s possible to feel bloated or gassy after the procedure.
