Taking care of your orthopedic needs

  • Not all joint pain is created equal

As the name suggests, joint pain is pain inside a joint.  It could signal that something is wrong inside your joint. It could be pain inside your knee, shoulder, hip or other body parts where two or more bones meet.

  • Six signs that it is time to see a doctor

Various injuries and conditions, such as sprains, fractures, tendinitis, and even infections, could cause pain. Most frequently, chronic conditions like arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are the culprit. Knowing the cause can help you and your doctor treat it.

If your pain is unbearable, to the point it gets in the way of your daily routine, it is wise to see a doctor. It is also a good idea to seek care if"

your joint is hot and swollen.

You have a fever unrelated to flu symptoms

You have lost ten or more pounds without trying

Your joint pain lasts more than several days.

The join looks crooked or different than usual.

You can't move the joint or put weight on it.

Even if your pain is mild, you should see your doctor, expecially if it makes it hard for you to complete a routine task or worsens overtime.

  • Four exercise tips to help prevent injuries

These four exercises tips can help increase your flexibility for a better range of motion and keep you active despite joint pain:

STRETCH: Stretch your muscles. Stretching improves flexibility and allows your joints and limbs to move as they should. Stretch out your quads and hamstrings three days a week, and get a foam roller.

WORK OUT: Focus on low-immpact exercises: You can stay active despite your knee pain. Try walking, bicycling, or swimming. They're easy on the joints and have a low risk of injury.

GET HELP: Ask for advice and follow instructions. If you already have joint issues, ask your doctor or physical therapist what you could do to help protect your joints. Your doctor can guide you on the road to wellness.

INCREASE STRENGTH: Focus on the quality or strength of the movement.  This is particulary important if you are an athlete. Your trainer can work with you on neuromuscular training, a fancy term for training that helps prepare your joints for the demands of your sport.

  • Find your way back to adventure

The things you love can be everyday tasks, such as taking your dog for a walk, or extreme adventures like climing Everest. Or you may be a proud new grandparent or a bowling champion. Whatever your passion is, life doesn't stop because of joint pain.
