Frequently asked questions

One of the best ways to find a geriatric physician is by asking for referrals from friends and family. Your Medicare Advantage plan or your health plan should also have a list of physicians in your network that will give you information on their specialty and whether they can care for your specific condition or needs. When you call to make an appointment, be sure to ask at that time if the provider takes your insurance.

You can check a provider’s in-network status by calling the physician’s office or hospital and requesting the physician’s specific tax ID. Then, call your insurance company and provide them with the ID number and your insurance plan information.

When switching physicians, you can call and ask the staff at your current provider’s office to provide you with a paper or electronic copy of your medical records. You can also request that they send that information to your new physician’s office.

Typically, seniors in their seventies should visit their physician at least twice a year. Those in their eighties or older should visit at least three times a year or every few months. Seniors should also see their physician more frequently if they are experiencing any health issues.

Allow extra time in your schedule when visiting a new physician. Be prepared to discuss your personal medical history, family medical history, and any medications you are currently taking, and have a list of any questions you want to ask during your appointment.

Geriatric physicians can help you monitor your health and manage chronic illnesses. They are also able to conduct routine screenings and provide referrals to specialists.

You can always schedule an appointment with your geriatric physician first, but they may refer you to a specialist that can provide more thorough care for your condition.
