Men often value strength and self-reliance. But sometimes, these very traits can stop them from getting the health care they need.

Studies consistently show that men are less likely than women to get preventive screenings, seek timely medical care, or receive recommended immunizations. Combined with men's shorter average life spans and a greater reported distrust in the health care system, these trends highlight the need to break the silence and empower men to take charge of their health.

As Dr. Scott Robertson, CEO of Dignity Health Medical Foundation, explains, "Many chronic conditions can be identified early, resulting in more options for treatment, preventing long-term complications, and a better quality of life."

Why Men Avoid Medical Care

It's not always simple why men avoid doctors. Here are some common reasons that stop men from getting the care they need:

Wanting to handle it alone: Many men believe they should be able to fix their own health problems. This can cause delays in getting professional help.

Fear of vulnerability: For some, admitting they need help feels like a sign of weakness, especially in cultures that teach men to be tough and not show feelings. As Dr. Robertson points out, "Many men perceive that having health issues is a sign of weakness. Unfortunately, this delays their access to care."

Financial concerns: The cost of health care can be a significant barrier for some men, especially those without insurance or facing financial hardship.

Busy schedules: Men often juggle careers and family responsibilities, leaving little time for self-care.

Taking Charge of Your Health

Here are some steps you can take to break the silence and take charge of your health:

Schedule regular checkups: Don't wait until you're experiencing symptoms to see a physician. Regular checkups can help detect potential health issues early, when they are often easier to treat.

Talk to your doctor about your concerns: Be open and honest with your doctor about any health concerns you may have, no matter how small they may seem.

Don't ignore symptoms: If you're experiencing any unusual symptoms, don't ignore them. Seek medical attention promptly to rule out any serious underlying conditions.

Make healthy lifestyle choices: Eating a balanced diet, getting regular exercise, and enough sleep are vital for good overall health.

Connect with others: Talking to friends, family, or a therapist can provide valuable support and help you feel less alone on your health journey.

Taking care of your health shows strength, not weakness. By speaking up and taking charge of your well-being, you can live a longer, healthier, and more fulfilling life.

“If you have concerns about your health, don’t wait to seek answers,” adds Dr. Robertson. “If you are of the age 50 or older, be sure to check in with your primary care provider regularly to make sure you are up to date on preventive screening and chronic illnesses are under control. Your loved ones will thank you for it.”
