Procedures Performed

Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is a medical procedure used primarily in the prenatal diagnosis of genetic conditions. It has other uses such as in the assessment of infection and fetal lung maturity.

During amniocentesis, an ultrasound wand (transducer) is used to show a baby’s position in the uterus on a monitor. A sample of amniotic fluid, which contains fetal cells and chemical produced by the baby, is then taken (extracted) for testing. This sample, is send out to a genetic testing lab.

Cancer Screenings

Screening refers to the use of simple tests across a healthy population to identify those individuals who have a disease, but do not yet have symptoms. Examples include breast cancer screening using mammography or clinical breast exam, and cervical cancer screening using pap smears, human papillomavirus test or visual inspection with acetic acid.

Cervical Cerclage

A cervical cerclage is a treatment that involves temporarily sewing the cervix closed with stitches. This may help the cervix hold a pregnancy in the uterus. A cerclage is done in the second trimester of pregnancy to prevent preterm birth.

Cesarean Section

A cesarean delivery, also called a cesarean section or c-section, is surgery to deliver a baby. The baby is taken out through your abdomen (belly). Some cesarean deliveries are planned ahead of time.

Pap Tests

A procedure in which a small brush is used to gently remove cells from the surface of the cervix and the area around it so they can be checked under a microscope for cervical cancer or cell changes that may lead to cervical cancer. A Pap test may also help find other conditions, such as infections or inflammation. It is usually done at the same time as a pelvic exam and may also be done at the same time as a test for certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). Also called Pap smear and Papanicolaou test.

Pelvic Exams

A pelvic exam involves physically and visually examining the female reproductive and sexual organs. It allows a doctor to look for signs of infection and illness
